Here we go
again
by Natural Products editor
Jim Manson
Is the BBC making me paranoid? I’m seriously
beginning to wonder.
Professor Regan’s Diet Show (BBC 2, Thursday evenings) is the latest
offering from the corporation to have a swipe at the natural health sector.
And whilst the show and its presenter are put forward as
scientifically-grounded and open-minded, the impression — once again — is
of a programme that has arrived at a conclusion before it has
started its investigation.
It certainly wasn’t all that hard to guess the ending (two former vitamin
users being told they were chucking money down the drain, who then declare
they “won’t be visiting a health food store in future”). Oh, and for good
measure, at the end of a discussion about the safety of supplements, the
programme has the narrator announce in his best serious voice “it’s clear
that vitamin supplements are not cuddly toys”.
The programme’s editing also had some familiar tell-tale signs,
particularly during the mini-debate staged between supplement industry
representatives and two academics. Whilst the industry insiders made a
couple of very good points, curious lingering camera shots and some awkward
silences made them look uncertain and, frankly, a bit shifty! No such
treatment for the academics.
This week, Regan’s theme is “The Medicine Cabinet” in which — according to
the blurb — she’ll be taking a look at herbal medicine and homeopathy and
discovering “just how powerful the placebo effect can be”. Why do I think I
know where this is going?

STOP THE MADNESS!
by Dounne Alexander MBE.
GRAMMA’S Founder Dounne Alexander, defends Zara’s Herbal Tea Advert against ASA ban!
On
15th March 2009, we were truly surprised and extremely
disappointed with the response received from the Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA), to our first advert promoting Zara’s Herbal Tea.
Published for public record, they found the advert to be
‘misleading, irresponsible and likely to exploit the vulnerable’. They
also stated that we did not supply evidence to prove each of the
conditions mentioned in the advert.
Within two weeks of Dounne uploading her defence onto the Gramma's website, she received a
special notice from the Medicine and Herbal products Regulartory
Agency (associates of the ASA); demanding that she 'IMMEDIATELY' stop
production and sales of Zara's Herbal Tea, with no right to appeal; on the
grounds that 'they' had declared it a medicine.
Dounne Alexander says “This we found quite
disturbing, as we had submitted the following information –
